Love Is the Key to Successful Parenting
DR. WALLACE: I am a single parent of an 11-year-old daughter and a 13-year-old son. I had a lot of problems as a teen because my parents were super lenient in controlling me. Let's say I could do almost anything that I wanted with no questions asked.…Read more.
Give Intelligent Young Women a Break
DR. WALLACE: I'm angry that you encourage all girls, even the mentally, emotionally and physically mature young women who happen to be teenagers, not to get involved with older guys. You are dead wrong in your assumption that older guys and teenage …Read more.
Open and Honest Conversation Is Paramount
DR. WALLACE: Please tell me what to do. I'm 20, married three years and the mother of a 2-year-old son. I love my husband very much, but I'm lonely and depressed. My husband works 12 to 16 hours, 6 days a week. I have no friends, no job and no time …Read more.
My Friend's Mother Helps Her Cheat
DR. WALLACE: We have homework four days a week in world history. I do all my homework by myself, but my best friend's mother helps her with hers. I average a B on my homework, but my friend averages an A. I don't believe this is fair. Both of us are …Read more.

He Should Not be Punished for Brother's FailureDR. WALLACE: I'm 17 and looking forward to attending college next year. I have been accepted at the University of California, Santa Barbara, about 100 miles away. My dad wants me to attend UC Irvine, which is only five miles away, so I can live at home. This is because my older brother went away to college, but messed up when he lived in a dorm. I want to attend school at UCSB, not UCI. What do you think? — Nameless, Mission Viejo, Calif. NAMELESS: You should not be punished for your brother's failure. If you and your parents can afford the extra cost of attending UCSB, you should be permitted to have the experience of attending a university away from home. MY ONLY VICE IS DRINKING BEER DR. WALLACE: I'm 18 and my only vice is that I drink beer. I don't smoke, do drugs or drink other forms of alcohol. I started drinking beer when I was 16 and have been doing so ever since. My girlfriend is very upset because I drink beer. How can I convince her that I control my beer and it doesn't control me? When I get drunk, it's because I want to. — George, York, Pa. GEORGE: Please read the following letter from another beer drinker, I mean former beer drinker, who wanted to share his story with our teen readers. DR. WALLACE: When I was a teenager, I started drinking a few "innocent" beers every now and then, and by the time I was 19, I was consuming a six-pack a day. Still, I thought I could handle my beer, so I got married and had three children. I had a good job and our family had a pretty good life — that is when I wasn't drinking beer.
Luckily, I now have my life back to normal with the help, guidance and understanding of Alcoholics Anonymous. Teens, please don't think that you can't get hooked on beer. I am living proof that you can. Would you believe that I never have tasted hard liquor or wine in my life — only beer? And it did me in. Alcohol is alcohol, regardless of its form. — John, Michigan City, Ind. I SMOKE POT, BUT I'M NOT A BAD GUY DR. WALLACE: I am a regular reader of your column. Much of what you say I can accept, but I can't accept your constant criticism of pot-smokers. I'm a pot-smoker (for the past four years), and I'm really not a bad guy. I'm on my own — have a part-time job and attend a nearby community college. Please, stop putting pot-smokers down. It's not like I'm shooting heroin! Let's admit that smoking pot is just like having a couple of beers. — Nameless, DeKalb, Ill. NAMELESS: I'm not putting marijuana users down. I'm putting the use of marijuana down. I realize that smoking marijuana is much more aligned with having an alcoholic drink than it is to shooting heroin, but I also discourage the use of alcohol.
