Middle East to the Bible Belt to the Philippines -- All in One Column!

Share Comment

Name me one other column that dares to mix burqas, the Bible Belt and "Barney Miller" into one sassy stew? To say nothing of sexual addiction and Subic Bay ...

Melanie: I'm surprised you ran a letter from a reader equating domestic violence with the wearing of a traditional burqa. I suppose, as Americans, we're conditioned to think our way is the only way and any other culture with a disparate perspective is just plain wrong.

However, I know many women of Middle Eastern origin who wear the burqa by choice. Their choice is to obey their god, their religion and its teachings. They wear the burqa to save their female beauty for their family. It's not a form of abuse for these women.

While I would feel subjugated and oppressed were I forced to wear a burqa, I would never force my liberal American views on others. That comment was offensive and marginalizing both to women trying to live their religion without fear and judgment and to real victims of domestic abuse.

Ben: You recently wrote, "There's no stigma to living together or even having children without marriage." Au contraire. I've been living with someone in Atlanta for five years, and I can honestly say that down here, in the Bible Belt, there's still a stigma.

We get funny looks whenever we correct someone for addressing one of us by the other's last name. When my partner registered her son for school, I had to sign an affidavit that they lived with me because, after all, they were living with me by my good graces.

Joe: Six months before my wife and I were married, we both discovered that we were sex addicts.

We were both virgins at the time and could not get enough sex once we started. In the early years, we probably had sex 15 to 20 times a week.

We've been married for 51 years, and it hasn't subsided, although now we're down to maybe three or four times a week, mostly due to old age.

We once tried to tally how many times we did it and came up with somewhere between 17,000 and 20,000 times. My wife is highly orgasmic, so that's her excuse. I really don't have one except I still can't get enough of her. It's been a great life, and we never thought of going out and doing it with anyone else. We've satisfied our addictions with each other.

Luke: You recently ran a letter from Mark who went to the Philippines to find a wife and praised the virtues of Filipino women. Any sailor or Marine who was based at Subic Bay will tell you that they will say or do anything (even kinky stuff) to get a U.S. serviceman to take them to the States. Tell Mark to get a dog if he wants a loyal and uncritical companion.

Naomi: When I read the letter from the woman whose husband has a panties fetish, I recalled a "Barney Miller" episode about some man who had a shoe fetish.

Wojo, who was one of the cops, said he used to be shocked about fetishes, but not anymore. He made a comment to the effect that you can open up a catalog and point to something, and someone somewhere would want to sleep with it!

LOL, My mom's friend went on a visit to the Phillipines and in just 5 days he already was hooked by one of the women there. My mom had told him to watch it or he would bring back a wife, and he is already trying to get a visa for his "Phillipina Princess!!!"
