Tips To Tame the High Cost of Computer Printing

Share Comment

If you ever have wondered how retailers can nearly give away computer printers as an incentive to purchase the computer, you may not have looked at the price of the ink cartridges. Manufacturers don't make their money on the machines. They know that if they can get you to accept that printer, you'll have no choice but to buy their expensive ink cartridges to keep the thing cranking out copies. But wait. Maybe you do have choices. Here are ways that "Everyday Cheapskate" readers keep the costs at bay without giving up the option of printing copies at home.

TONER TAMER. We purchase refurbished LaserJet printers on eBay. They use toner cartridges instead of ink. Toner lasts much longer and doesn't dry up if you don't print on a regular basis. Some of the printers we have purchased even come with a cartridge. Usually they cost us less than $100, including shipping, and toner cartridges need to be replaced far less often than the ink cartridges in inkjet printers. We save a lot of money in the long run. — Courtnay, Colorado

INK MASTER. I take my printer's ink cartridges to be refilled, which is cheaper than buying new cartridges. An employee at OfficeMax told me that the print quality for a refilled cartridge largely depends on how quickly it is refilled. If it is taken out of the printer and not refilled soon, the cartridge dries out and the print quality when it is refilled will not be as good.

PRINTER OPTIONS. Another way to save on printer ink is to print in black and white, as opposed to color, and choose lower-quality printing, such as "draft" quality or "fast print," when you don't need a quality copy. You usually can find these options under "preferences" when you are ready to print. Use the pull-down menu to print rather than the printer icon on your toolbar so you can change your printing options as needed. — Lucienne M., California

PAPERLESS PRESERVATION. When I make online purchases, I save the order confirmation screen in a folder under my favorites on my computer instead of printing the page for my records. Also, instead of making paper copies of rebate submissions, I scan the paperwork into my computer before mailing it. This way, I can look up the information quickly, and it is stored safely without creating clutter and wasting paper. — Patty, e-mail

These are good suggestions, and here's another: refill the cartridges yourself. There are many do-it-yourself articles on the internet giving instructions for several alternatives, from taking your empty cartridges to a store for refill, or buying a kit and doing it yourself. The refilling option is not for everyone, or every printer, but my household has learned to do it, and I think you or your teen can too.
I especially like the tip about scanning instead of printing. Scanning everything requires a lifestyle change as you get used to keeping hardly any paperwork around. Also, since your important information will be in your computer, it's necessary to buy and use an external drive that backs up your computer files. This is not a really pricey purchase, and it's worth it.
With scanning, I've disposed of an entire 2-drawer file cabinet, and have another cabinet to go.

In addition to printing in draft and black & white, as Lucienne suggests, I also use Print Preview any time I print anything from the Internet. For whatever reason, 90% of the time that you print a webpage, it runs over an extra blank page that has the header at the top and the address at the bottom of the page. If you use Print Preview, you can see what each printed page would contain and only print the relevant pages. It saves ink and paper.

As a technology teacher for a school district, and in consideration of the economy and state budget cuts for the schools, I teach my students to conserve paper and ink by copy/pasting ONLY what they want off the internet into a word doc, resetting the margins to .3, thereby sucking up all available space on a piece of paper before they print. I do it myself for my own personal use. I too have a folder on my computer for any purchase or payment confirmation emails/notifications I may want to keep, saving them there instead of printing them out. NOTE: make sure you backup or burn to a CD/DVD ANYTHING you wish NOT TO EVER LOOSE as nothing is more heartbreaking or frustrating than realizing too late your computer crashed, powersurged, etc and all your personal documents, pics, etc are gone, never to be retrieved without speding bukko bucks, or irretrievable. My sister found that out the hard way.......400 family photos over the last 5 years (yep! she had kids and grandkids) gone forever.......

A great source for toner & related items: http://www.lasermonks.com/ ----- From Wikipedia: "In the United States, many Cistercian monasteries support themselves through agriculture, forestry and rental of farmland. The Cistercian Abbey of Our Lady of Spring Bank, in Sparta, Wisconsin, supports itself with a group called "Laser Monks", which provides laser toner and ink jet cartridges, as well as items such as gourmet coffees and all-natural dog treats."
