ETHNICALLY SPEAKING

Dear Larry: I am sure you've heard about the Walmart controversy. But in case you do not know about it, an unknown man made the following announcement over the address system: "Attention, Walmart customers: All black people, leave the store now." Obviously, this caused a lot of minorities to become very upset.

Almost immediately after the announcement, the manager apologized over the address system and called the police to investigate who made such a racist statement. To date, no one has been apprehended.

I discussed this incident with a co-worker, who happens to be black. My friend is upset and thinks Walmart should do more to make amends besides give an empty apology.

I asked, "What more should the store do?" She did not have an answer. She is just angry and does not feel enough has been done.

Larry, do you have any suggestions? — Etna

Dear Etna: Words are like darts; once thrown, the damage is done. I believe the manager took the appropriate action to apologize and call the police to investigate.

Please do not jump to the conclusion that the person who made the statement is a white racist. I know plenty of minorities who would do such a thing thinking it was funny or just to cause a stir. Let's wait and see whether the culprit is found and/or identified.

I think Walmart could establish a system that prevents non-employees from accessing the public address telephone. Each employee could be given a code to use the phone. That code quickly would identify any mischief in a store.

The store could write a flier to be passed out to customers as they enter, expressing dismay over the incident and assuring them that everyone is appreciated regardless of race, color, etc.

Just in case the culprit is an employee, management could require a class on proper employee-customer relations.

Another thought: The company could offer a reward for information leading to the arrest or conviction of the perpetrator.

The purpose of all these suggestions is for the store to let everyone know it is serious about stopping this kind of unacceptable behavior.

You didn't ask, but I think your friend should lighten up a bit and not be so quick to be offended.

The biggest loser in all of this is Walmart.

It does not take many incidents for a store to lose customers. Once a store has a bad reputation, it is very hard to reverse.

Dear Larry: It is a little-known fact that the word "Americans" was coined by English writers who used the term in a derogatory manner to describe a marginal or secondary population unworthy of all the rights of full-blooded citizens of England. The "A-word" was understood as an insult implying you were a person of lower class.

We have the N-word and other demeaning words, but if we just wait awhile, they may change. — Eldon

Dear Eldon: Thanks for sharing. English is a very dynamic language. Words that had certain acceptable meanings when I was growing up are not allowed in polite company. Dictionaries add scores of new words every year.

Maybe that is the reason I don't understand the language of young people.

Eldon, what's your source for that story? I've read tons of history books in school and on my own, and I've never heard that. It sounds to me like an urban legend, and if you heard it on Fox News, I'd be all the more inclined to doubt it.

OK, a 16-year-old boy was nabbed for the Wally-World announcement. No word on his race yet!

America was named for Amerigo Vespucci, a Florentine merchant/explorer who came to this continent at least twice and whose name was selected by the mapmaker Martin Wardseemuler in 1507, as the name of this continent. There were no English involved, living here or picking the name.

Re: Kimiko. And if I heard a story on CNN, MSNBC, PBS, CBS, NBC, ABC, or NPR, I'd be all the more inclined to doubt it. You came to the WRONG place to start in on Fox News. Meeks isn't exactly the kind to uncritically accept anything he hears, especially not from the dinosaur drive-by media.

I associate Walmart with far worse things than this "racist" incident. Walmart has a long history of:
-cheating employees
-refusing to pay overtime
-busting unions
-putting mom-and-pop stores out of business
-falsely accusing people of shoplifting in order to extort money from them

When I heard of the racist message, I found it comical; it was just what I'd expect to hear in the place.

I'm with Roger, there are far worse things about Wal-mart, that's why I don't shop them. In regard to this incident, the store acted appropriately to this point, their next step is to figure out how the kid got on the PA system and to take steps to prevent it from happening again.
That's all they can do and after that, leave it alone people.

Thank you, BB, for pointing out the true origin of the word "America" and "Americans" -- something I would have hoped all Americans would have learned in their history classes -- I certainly remember learning it in mine. While I don't doubt that some in England, prior to the American Revolution considered Americans to be second class citizens of the British Empire, the term "American" has NEVER had the kind of derogatory, insulting meaning to it that has long been associated with the word "nigger." To compare the two is beyond ridiculous, and frankly, I can hardly believe Mr. Meeks didn't point this out -- or the fact that Eldon has no idea what he's talking about.
And Kimiko, why on earth you felt a need to make this about FOX News, I will never know. I am not a fan of FOX News -- in fact, I avoid watching it -- but bringing FOX News into this is about as ridiculous and ignorant as Eldon's comments about the origins of the word "American." I can only assume that you associate FOX with conservatism and that you associate conservatism with racism. I have really, really bad news for you: racism knows no political boundaries. Sadly, it is an equal opportunity evil.

re Roger:I have had about enough of this anti-Walmart shit. Seriously. It's gotten completely out of hand and it's now to the point where we're hearing about it most every day now. If you don't like the store, don't shop there! Meanwhile, I'll continue to pop in and buy a shirt, some lettuce, drill bits, a plastic storage bin and a fishing reel all in one stop...and save money over what the competition charges, to boot. Come to think of it, maybe if you aren't in there, the checkout lines will be a little shorter.
