ETHNICALLY SPEAKING

Dear Larry: I have been following the whole Tiger Woods debacle with great boredom and disinterest, not because I want to, but because I have no choice. Every time my clock radio goes off, that's the news I hear. Every time I open the paper, that's what I see.

I wrote to my local paper and the New York Post to complain. I told them that I'm not buying their papers until they shove Tiger Woods' philandering to the sports section, where it belongs. — Crank

Dear Crank: My mail has been running at a 10-1 ratio in your favor. I, like you, think the sports section is where we should be reading about the "Horny Tiger." All I want to hear is how any of this behavior relates to his hitting that little white ball.

Dear Larry: I am a white male, and I have been attracted to black women since childhood. I have dated a number of black women and have been in love with two of them. Unfortunately, they turned me down.

During my years of dating black women, I have gotten some hostilities from black men, once in high school and once at a dance club.

At the club, a couple of black men confronted me and told me to keep my distance from black women. They told me not to try to "hook up with a sister." All I was doing was talking to one black woman and asking her to dance and smiling at another black woman.

I didn't want any trouble, so I decided to leave the club.

What is ironic is that these same black men — plus others — were dancing with white women. They didn't have any problem with dating white women, but they didn't want a white man to date a black woman.

Maybe it's just me, Larry, but when it comes to interracial dating or any other form of relationship, why do some black men have problems with white men who date black women but find it acceptable for other black men to date white women? — PW

Dear PW: You witnessed a classic example of a hypocrite. It is not new. I have heard black women say vile words about white women who date black men, and I have seen black men react the same way the men in the club did to you.

It has been my experience that every race and ethnic group is guilty of this behavior. My next-door neighbor was Mexican, and he had a black girlfriend. However, he moved to another neighborhood when his sister started dating my brother.

I knew a white politician who had a black daughter, but he championed a white-supremacist political agenda. In my opinion, the classic racist hypocrites were the white slave masters who raped the black slaves but felt the mixing of races was immoral.

I am sure there are better examples of racist hypocrites. If any reader knows better ones, I will be happy to share.
