ETHNICALLY SPEAKING

Dear Larry: I have been following this whole Tiger Woods debacle with great interest and fascination. All the women Tiger has been out with are drop-dead gorgeous. I noticed these women are blond, white and mostly buxom. None of the women is African-American. I find this very interesting because he is of that ethnicity.

Do you think Tiger dislikes women of color? Do you think most black men prefer white women?

I am white and always have wanted to ask a minority that question, but I have been afraid to. — Randy

Dear Randy: According to statistics, most black men prefer black women and vice versa. According to the vast majority of minority males I know, they prefer women of their own race.

However, there are many black men who prefer white women over black women. I have heard some of these men say that black women are too bossy, too mean and too demanding and that black women do not know how to appreciate good black men. Regarding why they prefer white women, I have heard them say it's because white women are nicer, are more understanding and know how to behave.

It is not fair or accurate to stereotype the racial preferences of black men — or any group. The ethnic preferences of black men, like those of all ethnic groups, are varied and complex. There are no simple answers for why one chooses a certain type of person.

Please understand that a black man's dating a white woman does not mean he dislikes all black women. I have found that most relationships are based upon individuals.

Relationships generally are started because of looks, but they become lasting based upon the right personalities.

You didn't ask, but there are a great number of white men who prefer black women. The reasons are varied and complex, but that is another topic.

Dear Larry: Do you think the black community will turn its back on Tiger Woods because he prefers white women? — Curious

Dear Curious: No. Blacks did not turn their backs on O.J. Simpson or any other black man who has preferred white women. Remember Michael Jackson? He not only preferred white women but also turned his skin white; he even found white sperm to impregnate his wife. The black community did not vary in its support for this troubled artist.

Blacks will turn against their own only when one of them has the audacity to have thoughts or beliefs that are not considered typically black. Examples include Justice Clarence Thomas, Michael Steele, Condoleezza Rice and other conservatives.

Dear Larry: I had to laugh at one of your readers who wrote to you recently. She was asked to fill in her ethnicity on a form, and she described herself as a "human being." For the past 35 years, when asked for my race, I've put "human" if I've been in a good mood. However, if I am feeling a bit snarky, I put "redhead." — Shirley

Dear Shirley: You would be surprised at the many different answers readers sent to me. Here are a few: American, nope, 100-yard dash and NOYB (none of your business).

If you have an original answer, please share.

Love "100-yard-dash" answer. Mine is "3-mile" (standard cross-country for women).

Are we about done with Tiger Woods? Is he the first guy to fool around on his wife? Will he be the last? Is race really that important here?

Re: Linda Dor
When in college my son checked off all of the possible ethnicities. When quizzed, he replied, "As an anthropology major, I know that the oldest signs of humanoid life are found in Africa so it is likely that humans originated there. This makes me an African American. My great grandfather was an Irish immigrant with black hair and gray eyes. The original Celts were blond, the black hair is after the Spanish Armada wrecked on their shores, so I am Hispanic. I was born here, so I am a native American."
