Dear Larry: I would like to respond to one of your comments on President Obama. You mentioned that you want Obama to curtail the abortion rate because you think that a high percentage of aborted fetuses are black. While I understand and respect your opinion, I feel that abortion is not a killer of children, but a LIBERATOR of them!

Every child has the right to be wanted. I've seen too many children of all colors who haven't gotten the love they've needed, all because the parents were pressured into "keeping" them.

When a woman has an abortion, she is not terminating everything permanently. She simply is putting off having kids for a later time. She'll have enough eggs in her ovaries to fill a basket. I also think she should refrain from having sex.

I even saw an instance involving a married Jewish American couple in which the wife got pregnant while the husband was cheating on her. She was pressured to stay with the husband and not have an abortion. As her son grew up, I cringed and flinched when I saw her being mean to the poor kid. She viewed him as something that trapped her.

Abortion frees the mother to decide how many children she'll have. In the old days, abortion was less common, but there were also a lot of large families with a lot of unwanted kids. — Choice

Dear Choice: I know you have heard it all before, so I will not give you much of an argument. I just want to state for the record that I believe "terminating a pregnancy" is "killing a child." Regardless of how you want to spin the issue, I will not agree with you.

Dear Larry: I always enjoy your column because it is enlightening.

I enjoyed the information about Al Jolson. I grew up in "white" Iowa in the '50s. I was always uneasy when I saw Al Jolson in old tapes on other people's shows because I thought he was mocking black entertainers.

Your insight gives me new admiration for the man and a better understanding of the times. I am old enough to have been a witness to the black revolution; I am very proud that we have a black president.

I've been keeping company with a black man I met several years ago. During this time, I've found that our parents had the same values.

My friend's parents taught their children to be responsible for their own actions, how to handle money, and to put in an honest day's work for the dollars. This information was no surprise to me, but I thought it might be to many other whites, who may have an unreal stereotyped image of black people.

In addition, I've had very interesting exposure to black culture. I find it fascinating. It is somewhat like being around an Englishman — different perspectives, different words and different meanings.

One last point: The Southern dishes are superb. Actually, he's from Texas. — Jean

Dear Jean: Enjoy your experience. It is indeed fun to learn about other people and other cultures. Your experience will make you a more tolerant and enlightened person.

Reference to President Obama being black:

This is something that bothers me. Why is he considered black instead of bi-racial? I have bi-racial grandchildren and they refer to themselves as ''mixed''. They do not want to defer to either of their parents' race...they are proud of both.

I guess I feel that the president is not showing pride for both of his parents. And, this seems to bother me more and more as time passes.

Thank you, Channah

Dear Mr. Meeks,
I have been a Jolson fan for fifty years. Your comments could not possibly be more welcome. Not only did Jolson lead the way for blacks in entertainment as you stated, he entertained American troops in three wars, and left a small fortune for the benefit of New York City institutions of learning, and other charities.
So I'm sure it comes as no surprise to you, that when civic leaders, looking for only a news camera, disparage this man's reputation, it is a stain on the very fabric of America.
You have done a great service to young Americans, not only by enlightening tham about Jolson, but by questioning leaders who's words might otherwise be considered gospel.
As a representative of The International Al Jolson Society (www.jolson.org), I thank you, and I salute you.
