Double Standards For Infidelity Are UnfairDear Larry: I am writing to you because you are a man and I am too embarrassed to ask my friends. I have a problem I am trying my best to get over. My girlfriend of long standing told me she had sex with a mutual friend. I was never so hurt in my life. I started yelling and crying all at the same time. After I calmed down a bit, she told me "now you know how I felt when you had sex with Ruby." I will admit I had sex with her, but never told my girlfriend. The only thing she has to go on is rumors. My girlfriend does not have proof of my actions. On top of all of this is the fact that I do not even care for Ruby; she was just convenient at the time. There was no emotional attachment. There are several things that really bother me about all of this. My girlfriend had sex just to get back at me. This is no way for a person to act to get even. What if I really did not have sex with Ruby — then she would be in the wrong. I know I am wrong for having sex with another, and I want to forgive my girlfriend for what she did. She has asked me to move forward now that I know the pain of infidelity. I can't stop thinking about her having sex with another. My thoughts are driving me nuts. I can't enjoy making love to her because I keep thinking about the other guy. Larry, I don't want to lose her and walk away from our relationship. What can I do to let go and forget? — Kevin Dear Kevin: The first question you need to consider is did she really have sex with another? It would not be the first time someone did not speak the truth in this matter. If she did have sex with another, you are a victim of having double standards — one for a man and another for a woman.
All relationships consist of forgiving and letting go. If you cannot let go of what happened, then move on and stay single. No girl deserves to be held emotionally hostage for her mistakes. Dear Larry: I am 15 and my boyfriend Greg is 17. Greg is my first boyfriend. I am white and he is black. We have been going out for three months without my parents knowing. My parents found out about me seeing Greg and the fact that he is a minority. They hit the ceiling. I am grounded and forbidden to see Greg anymore. I know they are acting this way because Greg is black. My parents are racist. I confronted them on this issue. They said his race has nothing to do with it. They said I am too young and that I need to focus on school. I am thinking about running away. It is not fair to call your parents racist based upon what you have written to me. You have not provided any proof that Greg's skin color is a factor.
