Editor's Note: Hundreds of Ann Landers' loyal readers have requested that newspapers continue to publish her columns. These letters originally appeared in 1999.

Dear Ann Landers: After reading the letter from "Dog Lover in N.Y.," I had to write. "Dog Lover" was amazed that her friends had shelled out $750 to put their dogs in doggie camps. You responded with a quote from your grandmother, "Dogs should be with dogs, and people should be with people." Thankfully, the thousands who work with and benefit from pet-assisted therapy don't share your grandmother's views.

When my mother suffered a severe stroke, I put my dog, Kadie, in an airline carry-on bag and flew to my parents' home. Mom's crooked smile told me she was glad to see me, but her eyes reflected anxiety. When Kadie started to lick Mom's face, I saw hope and happiness come back into her eyes.

I then joined a local volunteer organization called Paws Across Texas. Kadie and I work as a registered therapy team, visiting nursing homes and hospitals. I witnessed a hardened street kid turn into a caring child when he gave my tired dog a drink of water out of a paper cup. I saw a handicapped person bury her face in the dog's fur and laugh with delight. And I've seen how it brightens the day of lonely seniors in a nursing home when Kadie cuddles next to them in bed.

— L.A. in Euless, Texas

Dear L.A.: Get out the wet noodle. My grandmother was wrong. The beautiful, warmhearted letters from dog lovers have convinced me that a dog can indeed be man's best friend.

Dear Ann Landers: A co-worker in my office told me she wanted to see a Broadway show. I have a friend, "Harry," who gets tickets for me. This co-worker (I'll call her "Mary") asked if he could get her two good seats. She gave me the money, and I paid for the tickets. When I handed them to Mary, she said the seats weren't very good and asked for her money back. I called Harry and asked if I could get a refund. He said, "Sorry, no. It's too late."

To keep the peace, I gave Mary her money back out of my own pocket even though I couldn't really afford it. Am I wrong to feel cheated, or was Mary right to make me take the loss on the tickets? Please respond in the paper. — Nameless in N.J.

Dear N.J.: Mary treated you shabbily. If she asks you again to get tickets from Harry, I hope you tell her, "Sorry, no" — and stick to it.

Then there are people like my mother. If someone brought a dog into her hospital room or her house, she would fly off the handle with, Get that dirty dog out of here!''.

When I went up to care for her the few months before she died, I had to give my dog to a friend to keep till I came nice he offered to do it.

Dear Ann
I have a problem I need help with. I am a single mom and had to send my daughter back to my mom, Because I was fire from a wright tree service Here in colorado after almost 10 years and I was never wrote up or disiplined and was not allowed any Promotion but the men under 40 were with less qualification and less time in with the company were.I was also fired when I was 47. My supervisor stated that was 29 at the time said to me that he was going to get rid of the old people the women shouldn't have the right to vote and women weren't good for any thing but having babies women aren't even good enough to raise them. I went to the EEOC and filed a charge and and they droped it with out even letting me see what Wright tree Service had put in against me or to rebuddal on it, .Than I hired and attorney Jim Abrim and he wrote out the paper work for me but would not go to court with me. So I hired and other attorney and he and he took $17.000 dollars from me and droped my case he worked on my case from june to August 2009. Now I am fighting this in court by my self to this day. I asked the court to afford me an attorney and they would not do any thing. Even a murder get afforded an atrorney Now the attorney that Bryan Kuhn that took $17,000 dollars is saying that I still owe him $3000.00 some odd dollars for doing nothing and put it on my credit report So that I no other attorney will work for me because I show money owed him.
Can you Help me Or Doesn't any good american citizen have rights in this country

Re: Kathleen
Ann Landers has been dead for many years. These columns are re-prints of her old ones. Ann cannot help you. You need to go to a Legal Aid clinic and find out what options are open to you. Look in your Yellow Pages phone book under "Legal Clinics." Good luck!
