An Inflated Take on a Classic

Dear Readers: A Merry Christmas to one and all. Here's an interesting take on the following well-known song, figures courtesy of the PNC Christmas Price Index:

"The Twelve Days of Christmas"

On the first day of Christmas my true love gave to me, a partridge in a pear tree (cost: $184.99, an increase of 14.2 percent from last year).

On the second day of Christmas my true love gave to me, two turtle doves ($125, an increase of 25 percent), and a partridge in a pear tree (another $184.99).

On the third day of Christmas my true love gave to me, three French hens ($150, no increase), two turtle doves ($125), and a partridge in a pear tree ($184.99).

On the fourth day of Christmas my true love gave to me, four calling birds ($519.96, those actually decreased 13.3 percent), three French hens ($150), two turtle doves ($125), and a partridge in a pear tree ($184.99).

On the fifth day of Christmas my true love gave to me, five gold rings ($645, believe it or not, a decrease of 0.8 percent), four calling birds ($519.96), three French hens ($150), two turtle doves ($125), and a partridge in a pear tree ($184.99).

On the sixth day of Christmas my true love gave to me, six geese-a-laying ($162, an increase of 8 percent), five gold rings ($645), four calling birds ($519.96), three French hens ($150), two turtle doves ($125), and a partridge in a pear tree ($184.99),

On the seventh day of Christmas my true love gave to me, seven swans-a-swimming ($6,300, expensive to begin with, they went up 12.5 percent), six geese-a-laying ($162), five gold rings ($645), four calling birds ($519.96), three French hens ($150), two turtle doves ($125), and a partridge in a pear tree ($184.99).

On the eighth day of Christmas my true love gave to me, eight maids-a-milking ($58, still at minimum wage), seven swans-a-swimming ($6,300), six geese-a-laying ($162), five gold rings ($645), four calling birds ($519.96), three French hens ($150), two turtle doves ($125), and a partridge in a pear tree ($184.99).

On the ninth day of Christmas my true love gave to me, nine ladies dancing ($6,294.03, no increase in salary), eight maids-a-milking ($58), seven swans-a-swimming ($6,300), six geese-a-laying ($162), five gold rings ($645), four calling birds ($519.96), three French hens ($150), two turtle doves ($125), and a partridge in a pear tree ($184.99).

On the tenth day of Christmas my true love gave to me, ten lords-a-leaping ($4,766.70, no increase), nine ladies dancing ($6,294.03), eight maids-a-milking ($58), seven swans-a-swimming ($6,300), six geese-a-laying ($162), five gold rings ($645), four calling birds ($519.96), three French hens ($150), two turtle doves ($125), and a partridge in a pear tree ($184.99).

On the eleventh day of Christmas my true love gave to me, eleven pipers piping ($2,427.60, slightly higher at 3 percent), ten lords-a-leaping ($4,766.70), nine ladies dancing ($6,294.03), eight maids-a-milking ($58), seven swans-a-swimming ($6,300), six geese-a-laying ($162), five gold rings ($645), four calling birds ($519.96), three French hens ($150), two turtle doves ($125), and a partridge in a pear tree ($184.99).

On the twelfth day of Christmas my true love gave to me, twelve drummers drumming ($2,629.90, also a 3 percent increase), eleven pipers piping ($2,427.60), ten lords-a-leaping ($4,766.70), nine ladies dancing ($6,294.03), eight maids-a-milking ($58), seven swans-a-swimming ($6,300), six geese-a-laying ($162), five gold rings ($645), four calling birds ($519.96), three French hens ($150), two turtle doves ($125), and a partridge in a pear tree ($184.99).

The total cost of these gifts would be $101,119.84 — even more for Internet shoppers with delivery costs.

Have a happy holiday. Stay away from the swans.

Just as I though Christmas couldn't become more mercantile... trust someone to find a way to put a price tag on a carol.

Merry Christmas!

PS: I'm a little miffed at the discrepencies between "nine ladies dancing ($6,294.03), eight maids-a-milking ($58), "/ What kind of "ladies" are doing said dancing? What type of dancing is it? And why are honest women doing hard labor so undervalued? Even the swans rank up into the thousands, but can we pay the milkin' maids a fair salary?

What is this world coming to.....

I guess I"ll just go back to "It's a wonderful life". Again, Merry Christmas all!

Christmas tree-$60
Christmas tree lights-$25
Making dinner for all the relatives who show up on Christmas Eve-$200
Presents for the kids-$300
Presents for all the relative you're obliged to give presents to-$250

The fact that I'm a Jew and don't have to deal with this crap-PRICELESS!!!!!!!

Americans end up broke on Christmas. I've seen people get stuck with months of bills from all the stuff they end up buying.

Re: Moishy

So true! I don't know a SINGLE Jewish person who purchases gifts for family at this time of year or gets in on family time during the winter holidays.

Also, kudos to you for making this a competition and denigrating a whole other religion's celebration. Good job!

Re: nanchan

Also, why are swimming swans worth so much more than laying geese? For shame!

Aw, come on guys. Can't you all just wish each other a Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, or just "Happy Sunday", and NOT bicker on Christmas Day at least?

Merry Christmas to all WHATEVER religion you practice - and a happy and healthy 2012!

Hey everyone - First of all - I wish anyone who is celebrating anything a this time of year a wonderful holiday, Happy Hanukkah, Merry Christmas and a happy and health New Year!
....that being said - this shouldn't be a competition about holidays... I don't agree with the snide comments about Hanukkah from either Moishy OR Claudia... "..what happened to giving gifts on the 8 Days of Hanukkah? Or are you just a cheap bastard?" FYI Hanukkah is a very MINOR holiday in the Jewish religion and gift giving is NOT a part of the traditional way of celebrating... It has become a way of "keeping up with the Jones" who celebrate other holidays by SOME Jews, or mixed-religion couples...
Cant we keep it happy and light ONE day a year? Eat your Christmas dinner or your take out Chinese food - and be thankful for what you have....

All this bickering about how various religions celebrate is ridiculous.
I agree with Kitty and Casey.

I'm not Jewish, but I've been surrounded by Jews all my life.

Hanukkah (the Festival of Lights) means "rededication", and celebrates the rededication of the second Holy Temple at the time of the Maccanean revolt (second century), and the fact that a miracle occured - there was only ritual oil left for one day, and yet it continued burning for the eight days that it took to press more from olives. Religiously speaking, it is a minor holiday.

I didn't even see anything derogatory in Moishy's comment. It IS true that Hannukah was never about gift-giving in the first place - Hannukah-geld starting happening in America, because it often coincides with Christmas and North-Americans make such a big deal out of gift-giving at Christmas, local Jews didn't want their children to feel left out. There was no put down in what he said - indeed he does NOT have to indulge, and many of the more Orthodox Jews don't.

MERRY CHRISTMAS and a GOOD HANNUKAH too, to all people of good will! (Let's be of good will, shall we?)

Moishy called the gift-giving tradition and Christmas dinners crap... I dislike buying gifts and cooking turkeys as much as the next curmudgeon but Moishy's comment WAS intended to be offensive.

Merry Christmas AND Happy Hanukkah to those who celebrate these wonderful holidays.

As for the column today... sigh. There they go again with the schlock.

I also agree with Martha, Kitty and Casey. Seriously, as if there isn't enough garbage some people pull on each other this time of year under their own roofs with their own families because of hang-ups and unrealistic expectations. Enough. Can we make the BTL forum a no-drama zone today - just one day?

Going to help hubby with the mashers now. Hope the rest of you enjoy whatever you're celebrating - or not, and please, quit fighting!

@ Nanchan, #6,

At first, I agreed with you. Then, I realized that eight maids a milking was probably translated into unskilled minimum wage labor (ala fast food, entry level clerical work or construction) whereas nine ladies dancing was probably translated as the salary for a professional ballerina, many of whom have four year college degrees and have trained in their fields even longer than that. Moral of the story? If you want to make money, go to college.

RE: nanchan # 6 (8 maids a milking) Probably those poor German women out there helping their husbands. I see them all the time out in the fields, wearing the big boots, getting all muddy, while hubby drives the tractor. So, I'll bet they're in the barn, milking the cows, too.

In yesterday's post, I wrote about when my son was in the 3rd grade, he said that his classmates open their presents on the eve of the 24th, why couldn't he. And then, I said that I let him open one small present on the 24th, but the rest on the 25th. We did that for a few years, but then end up opening all on the eve of the 24th. I forgot to mention that I keep one small present aside to be opened on the morning of the 25th. He's 18 now, but he still looks forward to that one small present on the 25th. This AM, he thot he was getting a Gutschein (gift certificate) as he requested one to H&M, but I gave him cash so he could use it towards other things - such as - gas up the car, it's on empty again. LOL. Santa (my husband) filled up the kid's car during the night. Ho ! Ho ! Ho !

BTW folks, people in the states have been complaining for quite some time about the cost of gas. Well, we pay $9.00 a gal. So, enjoy the prices you have now as you never know from one day to the next when it will skyrocket.

So, for some of you posters who are getting all riley about whether you celebrate Christmas or not, just for at least one day - BE COOl, CALM and COLLECTIVE - Bring ot the "SECRET" !

Happy Holidays to all !!

Re: Michelle Keane
The ex LOML used to tell me that in many parts of the world where he was stationed in the past, everybody, Muslims, Jews and Christians alike, would celebrate other peoples' holidays all together with whoever whose main holiday it was with the attitude - hey, life is hard enough, any chance to party is welcome! (karaoke starting - "THAT'S the way, huh-huh, huh-huh, I LIKE it!")

WOO - HOO, holding up my beer and cheers to everyone, I did get some cash in my stocking, happymom, your prayers have been heard!

And, double and triple woo-hoo, woo-hoo, woo-hoo and Bugs Bunny happy dance, Bitey Fish is back! Now THAT is a worthy Christmas gift to us all!

Merry Fishmas, Bitey Fish! Mwa, mwa, mwa, kisses and love bites!

Well, the Annies have managed to transform the usually dulcet words of a favourite Christmas canticle into something tawdry. They didn't even do the research themselves – this over-used annual price check does not belong in their column.
